Labour express thanks to NHS Shetland
26th April 2011
The Scottish Labour party candidate, Jamie Kerr, has today expressed his thanks to the staff of the Maternity Unit at the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick.
Jamie and his Finnish wife, Leena, are delighted to announce that they are expecting their first child, who is due to be born in October.
They recently attended the Gilbert Bain Hospital in order to have their 12 week scan.
Jamie said:
"We’re obviously over the moon with the news.
"The staff at the maternity unit were great and immediately put us at ease with their warm welcome.
"Their skills and professionalism were evident as we watched our baby bouncing around during the scan.
"Our experience at the hospital reaffirmed our belief in the importance of protecting and developing frontline healthcare services on the Islands.
"The NHS is a lifeline for so many people and our visit there reminds us of the need to protect it from cuts.
"It is not an easy time to start a family as young families are under attack by the Lib Dem/Tory Coalition government.
"Their brutal cuts are hard hitting with the £190 Health in Pregnancy Grant being abolished by them this month.
"This leaves couples like us worse off as we struggle to re-organise our finances for the arrival of our little one.
"On top of this, they have frozen child benefit, axed the baby element of child tax credits and stopped contributions to child trust funds.
"It’s grim really.
"Even though there is an ongoing world-wide financial recession, these particular cuts are shameful.
"Rather than hitting vulnerable groups, savings should rather be made by merging bureaucratic structures and systems. "
