The Scottish Labour Party candidate, Jamie Kerr, has today expressed his support for teachers for all the hard work they do in schools across Shetland.
This follows his visits this week to a number of schools including Brae High School as well as a planned visit to the Anderson High early next week.
Jamie said:
"I have been impressed by the very high standards in the schools across Shetland.
"The standard of teaching is extremely high and the pupils are a credit to the schools and the communities that they come from.
"The dedication and energy with which the teachers carry out their work is admirable, given the background of cuts and school closures.
"Many teachers are stretched and overworked as a result of the SNP’s broken promises on teacher numbers.
"This is affecting the Curriculum for Excellence which teachers are still expected to implement despite the brutal cuts in funding.
" The education of our young must be protected at all costs.
"The Tories want to let people leave school at 14 years old.
"The Lib Dems voted to introduce tuition fees to Universities.
"These policies harm the educational prospects of our young.
"Were the policies in effect when I was at school and university, then I would not be in the position I am today.
"My father is a window cleaner and my mother cleans in hotels.
"It was only through hardwork and a high standard of free education that I was able to become a human rights lawyer.
"The Labour Party is dedicated to supporting our teachers, students and pupils in order that Shetland’s young can reach their full potential without being held back by cuts or the tuition fees that the Lib Dem/Tory coalition are so determined to impose."
